University Council
The University Council (UR) of Maastricht University is a representative body as referred to in the Higher Education and Research Act (WHW). The main powers of the UR are the right to advise and the right to consent. These powers are laid down in the UM Governance and Management Regulations, which were drawn up in consultation with the UR.
The UR also acts as an advisor to the Executive Board, is involved in evaluations and monitoring, and can propose new initiatives itself. The UR works with three permanent committees in which students and staff discuss plans with the Executive Board. Every month, a plenary meeting takes place between the full council and the Executive Board.
The council has twenty members, divided equally between students and staff. The ten staff members are elected every two years (six academic staff, four support staff). The ten student members are elected annually.
